Nominator Information:
Joanna Merckx, joanna-trees.merckx@mcgill.ca

Nomination Type: Individual

Nominee: Li Wenliang

Reason for Nomination:

Chinese ophthalmologist – died on 6 February 2020.
It was a courageous and crucial “act” at the very start of the pandemic that Dr. Wenliang shared publicly the unusual happenings he witnessed in his patients. It is tragic, that he initially was punished by the legal authorities for speaking up and that he fell sick and died, at the age of 33, of the very direct consequences of COVID-19, to be only be fully exonerated with a state apology for his mistreatment afterwards. He should be honoured for his actions and his memory should be kept alive.
