Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Statement

The Society for Epidemiologic Research (SER) is committed to working toward justice and equity within our Society, within the field of epidemiology, and in society at large. We respect and seek out inclusion of differences, understanding that diversity of thought, background and approach at SER is not only morally just, but creates context for both personal and professional enrichment. We insist on a culture of respect and recognize that words and actions matter. We condemn intolerance, discrimination, racism, white supremacy, oppression, and violence in all of its forms.
SER is committed to the following core values that provide the foundation for a diverse, inclusive and equitable environment within our Society:

 

Diversity: We are committed to achieving the greatest possible representation in our Society through all our varied identities, backgrounds, affiliations, and forms of personal expression.

 

Equity: Representation is important but not sufficient to create a just environment. We are committed to addressing the legacies of oppression as they are manifested in our community, relationships, and hierarchies.

 

Inclusion: We are committed to supporting all members of our community and working to reform structures and processes that are not accessible to all.

 

An environment centered on diversity, equity, and inclusion is necessary for the enhancement, development and support of epidemiology within and outside of our organization, our annual meeting, and service activities of the SER community. We are committed to supporting all members of our community irrespective of background, identity, or affiliation. We hold ourselves to the highest standards of performance toward these reasonable and achievable goals. We accept responsibility for the outcome of this work, as well as the process that leads to it.
