Research Scientist II (Cancer Epidemiology/Health Services)

Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical Group (MAPMG) invites applications for the position of Research Scientist II to join the Mid-Atlantic Permanente Research Institute (MAPRI). As part of this innovative research team, you will design and implement health services and epidemiology-related research, with a particular emphasis on cancer epidemiology and health services research. This is a full-time position based in our regional office located in Capitol Hill, Washington D.C. with a hybrid work model. This position requires going into the regional office at least twice per month on designated days, which will be set by the team.
Reporting to the Director of Research Science, the Research Scientist II will develop and lead independent research projects, seek and secure external funding (federal grants, foundations, and industry), and disseminate research findings through peer-reviewed journals and national scientific meetings. This position offers a unique opportunity to shape and advance cancer-related health services research while working collaboratively with physicians, researchers, and external partners.
You can expect to:
Research Development: Lead the development of a defined, innovative, and independent research portfolio in cancer epidemiology and/or health services research.
Extramural Grant Funding: Prepare and submit grant proposals for extramural research funding (e.g., federal agencies, foundations, and industry), including at least one successful federal grant application annually as Principal Investigator (PI). Achieve funding for 75-80% of your annual effort within 5 years of employment.
Collaboration: Establish collaborations with external partners, including local, state, and federal agencies, research networks (e.g., Health Care Systems Research Network), and academic partners.
Publications & Presentations: Publish 1 to 2 first-author papers and 1 to 2 co-author papers annually and present at national scientific meetings and contribute to peer-reviewed journals.
Consultation: Provide expert consultation on study design, data analysis, and interpretation to MAPMG physicians, clinicians, and staff.
Leadership & Mentorship: Lead multidisciplinary research teams, mentor junior researchers and staff, and contribute to the development of the scientific program at MAPRI.
Compliance & Ethics: Ensure adherence to regulatory guidelines and organizational standards of conduct, maintaining confidentiality and integrity.
Service to Scientific Community: Participate in peer review, serve on expert panels, and engage in service activities within the broader scientific community.
What is required:
PhD in Epidemiology, Health Services Research, Nursing, or related discipline is required; OR MD/DO with an advanced degree (e.g., MPH, MAS, MS, PhD)
Minimum of six (6) years of post-doctoral research experience in epidemiology, health services research, or related field is required
Minimum of three (3) years of experience in a health system research setting preferred
Must have demonstrated success in obtaining extramural grant funding, including federal grants
Must have experience with cancer epidemiology or health services research in the context of cancer care delivery and outcomes
Established publication record with more than 30 peer-reviewed manuscripts, including at least 6 as first author
Expertise in epidemiological and health services research methods, including statistical techniques and study designs
Proven ability to lead original research studies and publish results
Must be able to go into the regional office located in Capitol Hill, Washington D.C. a minimum of twice per month
Candidates must either currently live in or be willing to relocate to the Washington D.C., Maryland, or Virginia area
Must provide documentation of the Covid vaccine 2-dose series (or J&J 1-dose) prior to October 1, 2023, or documentation for 1-dose of the most current Covid vaccine (Pfizer or Moderna) as a condition of employment. Must provide documentation for the influenza vaccine as a condition of employment.

The starting annual salary for this position ranges from $152,776.24 to $190,970.12 depending on circumstances including an applicant’s skills and qualifications, certain degrees and certifications, prior job experience, training, market data, and other relevant factors.
