Immediately following the SPC Business Meeting, come join us for Happy Hour! I particularly enjoy Happy Hour because you meet so many people that you continue to see through the rest of the conference. It’s a great way to meet SPC members from other universities and create new social and professional links. We plan on going to the Yard House, just a short distance from the hotel. See you there!
The SPC Business Meeting will take place before the Wednesday Poster Session. Here we will talk about SPC business, meet our current SPC officers, and welcome our newly elected SPC Officers for the coming year. And if that isn’t enough to entice you to come, we will hold our Annual Raffle during the Business Meeting. Thanks to our many gracious donors, we will be raffling all sorts of goodies. Attendance is required to participate in the Raffle. We hope to see you there!
A new take on our previous Poster Tours, The SPC Mentored Poster Chats will pair a senior Colleague Mentor with 1 to 2 student/trainee SER members at the Posters Sessions during the meeting. Mentors will guide their mentees around the poster sessions to foster discussion of the posters’ presentation and content, and broadly to their own work. This is your chance for a fun chat with Maria Glymour, J. Michael Oakes, or Germaine Buck Louis!
Similar to our morning sessions of Breakfast with the Experts, our Noon Round Table discussions will be on Wednesday and Thursday. These sessions are lead by a Senior SER Colleague and tailored to content and professional development. Some of this year’s line-up includes Judea Pearl, Tyler VanderWeele, Lauren Wise, Dana Dabalea, and many more!
As the title suggests, these are early morning round table sessions that take place before the opening Plenary Sessions on Wednesday and Thursday. A Senior SER Colleague will lead a discussion group of student/trainees. These sessions will provide an excellent opportunity to meet your epidemiology ‘heroes’. Sessions will be based on their area of expertise, a discussion of a specific paper or topic in epidemiology, or potential advice on career development and advancement. Some of this year’s Experts include Jennifer Ahern, Matt Fox, and Tim Lash!
Greetings and salutations! The SPC is currently finishing up the planning of our events at the Annual Meeting in Denver, CO. We have will have all of our usual popular offerings including Breakfast with the Experts, Lunch Roundtables, and Mentored Poster Chats. We are very fortunate that so many of our senior colleagues have been generous with their time at the Annual Meeting to meet directly with you, our student and trainee membership. These are all ticketed events and online sign-up will open on Monday, June 1. Remaining tickets will be available during opening registration at the Annual Meeting. In addition to our ticketed events, we will also have our Junior Career Panel, where you can ask all of those burning questions you have about how to advance your career. What sparked your decision to become an epidemiologist? I was a psychology major in college, but left unsure about whether I wanted to pursue a clinical or research career. I began different volunteer experiences and graduate classes to help clarify my thinking. In the process of all of this, I learned that the sometimes heart-wrenching demands of mental health clinical work were something I may not be able to meet for the duration of my career while my passion for research grew. During that time, I worked with someone who ultimately took a position at Massachusetts General Hospital with a team that was overseeing the implementation of an NIMH-funded 20-site study of bipolar disorder. Soon after that, she contacted me about another position within the team and I moved from NYC to Boston. The study was enormous by psychology standards (the final n was in the thousands), and the focus of the main arm of the study was documenting the natural course of the disorder and tracking standard clinical care at the sites (with subsequent randomization arms depending on response to treatment). The control and administration of SER is vested in an Executive Committee, which, per SER bylaws, includes a President, Past-President, President-Elect, Secretary-Treasurer, four Members at large and an Administrative Director. All positions, except for the Administrative Director, are elected individually by majority vote of the members voting. The 2015 Elections include candidates for President-Elect, Member at Large, and Secretary Treasurer. SER members are entitled to vote for one candidate in each category.
