Craig Meyer, SER-SPC President The SPC has been busy organizing and finalizing the programming at the Annual Meeting. There will be many opportunities to network and meet experts in the field at our SPC events, including Breakfast With the Experts, Lunchtime Roundtables, Junior Career Panel, and Mentored Poster Chats. Online registration for our ticketed events opened on June 1 for a limited number of seats. We will have our remaining tickets available at the SPC table, first come first serve, at opening registration on Tuesday, June 16, starting at 5PM. If you’d like to know more about the SPC, make sure to attend the SPC Business Meeting and Raffle. This will be followed immediately with a Happy Hour. More details and a full itinerary are available on the SER meeting app, and on the SER website, click here. Good luck with the final touches on your posters and presentations! We look forward to seeing you in Denver! Cheers, Craig
Timothy L. Lash, SER President My year as President of the Society for Epidemiologic Research has been far more work than advertised, and far more rewarding than advertised. We have accomplished a lot. One of the main highlights has been the launch of the new and vastly improved SER web site. The web site has enabled far more effective and efficient communication with our members, and has enabled seamless submission and evaluation of abstracts, workshop proposals, symposium proposals, and award nominations. We have also held successful SERtalks events in Atlanta, New Orleans, Chicago, and Washington DC, and we had the largest attendance yet at the SERdigital meeting organized by the Student and Postdoc Committee. We continue to curate a growing number of short videos on the SERexperts page, and we have an ever expanding list of readings on the SERplaylists page. All of this happened before we even get to the annual meeting in Denver. This year’s annual meeting will itself have many new aspects. Our colleagues at SPER and the SPC , and many local volunteers from the Colorado universities, have worked closely with SER to organize the inaugural fun run for Wednesday morning of the meeting. More than 150 people […]
The SPC Junior Career Panel is a casual noon-session with early career panelists sharing their experience about their career trajectories. Our panelists come from a variety of areas including academia, government, and private industry. This is your chance to ask all of those questions you’ve been thinking about for taking the next steps in your career!

One of the most important things to do, especially as a grad student, is to network. Although, the word ‘networking’ makes it sound so cold and dull. Instead, talk to people you find interesting! As a grad student who will be attending the SER annual meeting for the fourth time and having talked to people I consider to be epidemiology celebrities (as who I was more nervous to talk to than I would be talking to Beyonce), no one has even so much given me a bad vibe for having approached them. Although attending talks and reading posters is important, meeting people face to face is the one thing you can do at a conference that you can’t do from your office. So if you see someone interesting at the conference, don’t be afraid, chat them up!
