Janet Lane-Claypon (1877–1967) was a British epidemiologist, physician, and public health pioneer. She made groundbreaking contributions to epidemiologic research, particularly in cancer epidemiology and maternal and child health. In 1912, Dr. Lane-Claypon pioneered the use of the retrospective cohort study, identifying the role of breastfeeding in infant weight gain. In 1926, she conducted one of the first case-control studies, identifying most of the currently recognized risk factors for breast cancer. Dr. Lane-Claypon’s work shaped some of the most important foundations of epidemiologic study design, placing her as a leader in epidemiology and public health.
