Mental Health & Alcohol Abuse: Descriptive Epidemiology Using the All of Us Research Program Aeisha Thomas* Drenen Magee Aeisha Thomas

Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) has been shown to be highly associated with Depression and Anxiety. Medical research has historically lacked diversity; thus, we hypothesize the existence of possible undiscovered connections between these conditions, especially within underrepresented populations.

To help address this, our descriptive epidemiology study uses the diversity, size, and biologically and behaviorally rich nature of the All of Us Research Program database (AoU) to describe, in parallel, Depression or Anxiety and AUD within AoU; hoping to complement past studies, or, potentially, find novel distributions.

This cross-sectional study describes the demographic data pertaining to race and sex assigned at birth in cohorts built from the AoU Personal and Family Health History Survey (Controlled Access, v7) (PFHHS). These were AUD and Depression, AUD alone, Depression alone, and Neither (AUD/D Cohorts). Corresponding cohorts for AUD and Anxiety were also built in parallel (AUD/A Cohorts). Thus, eight cohorts were designed to describe Depression or Anxiety alongside AUD within AoU.

PFHHS participants (n = 185,232) are: 64.0% Female, 33.8% Male, 1.2% Other; 71.4% White, 9.4% Black or African American, and 19.2% Other Minorities.

For the AUD/D Cohorts the distributions were: (a) Overall, 2.4% AUD and Depression, 1.3% AUD, 27.1% Depression, and 69.3% Neither, (b) White population (n = 132,239), 2.7% AUD and Depression, 1.4% AUD, 28.9% Depression, and 67.0% Neither, and (c) Black population (n = 17,335), 2.0% AUD and Depression, 1.4% AUD, 22.6% Depression, and 74% Neither.

For the AUD/A Cohorts the distributions were: (a) Overall, 1.7% both AUD and Anxiety, 1.9% AUD, 19.8% Anxiety, and 76.6% Neither, (b) White population, 1.3% AUD and Anxiety, 2.1% AUD, 21.5% Anxiety, and 74.7% neither, and (c) Black population, 1.3% both, 2.0% AUD, 21.2% Anxiety, and 81.6% Neither.

These descriptions add to previous research, demonstrating the value of the AoU’s unique landscape.
