What’s the first thing on every grad student’s mind? Food. Or rather, cheap food. Check out Westwood’s restaurant guide for cheap and delicious options in downtown Denver including Beast + Bottle and Tom’s Home Cookin’, both cheap “Critic’s Picks” within a 20 minute walk from the Hyatt. If you’re willing to part with $33, the Denver Microbrew Tour will take you on a 1.5 mile walk to 4 breweries to sample 10 beers. Just make sure you do this one after you give your talk.
If you want to get somewhere further than a comfortable walk away, hitch a ride on Denver’s light rail and bus system. Their website makes it easy to plan a trip or download the app Moovit and plans your trips on the go. Each ride (within the local zone) costs $2.25 or shell out $6.25 for the unlimited day pass.
Make sure you check out the State Capitol Building, only a fifteen minute walk away and, if you haven’t had your fill of great science at the conference, hop on a bus to the Denver Museum of Nature & Science and get in for $6 with your student ID. The museum is in City Park, which is worth checking out and right next to the Denver Zoo! Before all these travels, make sure you visit Denver Story Trek’s website which will provide you audio for a free, self-guided tour of the city.
Lastly, on arrival, check out Mile High on the Cheap for info on cheap and free events and activities, including food and free movies passes.
