Megan is an epidemiologist that specializes in maternal and child health during “normal” times. Starting in February of 2020, Megan began volunteering her expertise in reading and understanding epidemiological literature and basics of the science of infectious disease. Megan devoted countless hours throughout the spring and summer of 2020 to helping her institution safely reopen. As fall approached and it became clear that there would be no evidence-based assistance provided to public school districts in regards to safe learning in the pandemic, Megan additionally volunteered to help local school districts understand the pandemic and to create safe protocols and reopening plans. Megan has been meeting regularly with two local districts and consulting with other districts as requested, since August 2020, spending hours a week translating research and answering questions. This expanded to assisting the city she lives in with distributing data and presenting to a local coalition of health care providers. Finally, Megan also registered as a volunteer with Skype a Scientist, and has enjoyed zooming into classrooms of students throughout the country to talk about the pandemic and answer their questions.
