Mauricio L. Barreto – After finishing my medical studies in 1977, I completed a Master’s degree in Public Health, and in 1980 began my academic career at the School of Medicine, Federal University of Bahia, Brazil. In 1987, I was awarded a Ph.D. from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), University of London, where I am now an Honorary Professor.. In 1998, I became full Professor of Collective Health Epidemiology at the Institute of Collective Health, Federal University of Bahia. I have mentored students at all levels, and have so far successfully oriented 19 PhDs dissertations. My research interests include the study of macro and micro determinants of infections and infectious diseases, the social determinants of health and the evaluation of the impact of health technologies and social programs on health. The infectious diseases I have studied include S. mansoni, intestinal helminths infections, diarrhea, tuberculosis, leprosy and dengue. More recently, I included, as a research topic, asthma and allergy in the frame of the so called “hygiene hypothesis”. This broad interest in different epidemiological topics I carry on jointly with a large and multidisciplinary network of collaborators, reflecting the inter-disciplinary perspective of my research program. I have been the PI of large research studies. At present, I coordinate the SCAALA (Social Change Asthma and Allergies in Latin America) network and INCT-CITECS a network dedicated to health public health innovations. My evaluative research include large trials (i.e. the Brazilian REVAC trial that include over 300,000 participants) and large observational and quasi-experimental studies. I have participated in several health policies and scientific advisory and evaluative boards at national and international agencies. I have published over 340 papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals, with a high bibliometric impact (H-index =53 in Google Scholar, 33 in Scopus and 31 in ISI/Web of Science) but also an impact in policies. I am Editorial consultant of the Lancet, and up to February 2011 Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health.
