Dr. Aiello is Professor of Epidemiology and the Social Epidemiology Program Leader at the University of North Carolina Gillings School of Global Public Health. A member of the UNC faculty since January 2014, Dr. Aiello was previously on faculty at the University of Michigan School of Public Health and a member of the Center for Social Epidemiology and Population Health. For her post-doctoral work, Dr. Aiello was a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health and Society Scholar at the University of Michigan. Dr. Aiello’s research examines social, psychological, and immunological aspects of disease disparities. She has identified links between socioeconomic position, cytomegalovirus infection, inflammation, and health outcomes across the life course. Dr. Aiello has several ongoing projects examining social determinants of infection, immune biomarkers, and chronic disease outcomes in diverse populations across the US and in the UK. She has extensive research experience involving socioeconomic health disparity research and overseeing large population-based epidemiologic studies involving the collection and analysis of biospecimens across a range of ages. Dr. Aiello’s work utilizes population health approaches: her work is multidisciplinary, considers factors at multiple levels, and makes use of longitudinal data collection and analyses to identify intervention targets at both the individual and population level.
