SERnews – October 2023

OCTOBER 2023

President’s Message

William C. Miller

SER is the most member-focused and member-driven organization that I have encountered in my career. As we move to the end of September, our members have just wrapped up submitting their proposals for symposia, lunch sessions, and workshops. Soon, we will be setting the agenda for the annual meeting in Austin next June.

SPC President’s Message

Nedghie Adrien

Hi everyone! Nedghie Adrien, signing in as your new Student & Post-Doc Committee (SPC) President. I’m following in the footsteps of Sharia Ahmed who has been a phenomenal leader. I’m glad she remains on as Past President so that I can continue to learn from her.

SER Opportunities

The Society for Epidemiologic Research (SER) is committed to providing opportunities for all interested individuals to both present and participate in SER organized activities. SER provides programming in virtual and in-person formats throughout the year, and has been expanding these opportunities in recent years. Beginning in 2023, we introduced a virtual presentation option at the Mid-Year Meeting in March, and a virtual participation option for the Annual Meeting in June. Please see below for more details.

#SER2024 – Austin

Planning for #SER2024 is underway! Mark your calendars for June 18-21, 2024.

SER in Austin

Why Austin?
A message from SER President, William Miller

In the past year, reproductive rights in the United States have been taken away or threatened in 24 states. At the same time, 26 states have laws that are discriminatory to people who identify as LGBTQ+, and at least 35 states have passed or considered legislation on how U.S. history is (or is not) taught in schools. The State of Texas has been aggressive in these areas.

Why we should work with people in places we disagree with
A message from Dr. Sandro Galea, Dean and Professor at the Boston University School of Public Health

“…should we participate in events, such as professional conferences, that are held in US states that pass laws that are contrary to the values of our field? Should we work with scientists in those states?…”

SER Mid-Year Meeting

Join us virtually and in person at the University of Toronto for the 2024 SER Mid-Year Meeting. Events will be held March 4-8, 2024.

Member Insight

Jessica Agnew-Blais
I have always been interested in mental health, but more as a public health issue than from the perspective of a clinician, so psychiatric epidemiology was the perfect way to pursue this interest.
