Emergency Department Visits for Heat Stroke in the United States, 2016-2021
Abstract
Despite the knowledge and recognition of increasing frequency and severity of extreme heat events across the United States, there is a remaining gap in the research regarding the demographics of heat stroke mortality and epidemiological trends for ED visits. Using the National Emergency Department Sample, this study investigates the epidemiological patterns of ED visits for heat stroke, defined using ICD-10 codes (T67.0), from 2016 to 2021. Annual incidence rates will be calculated using U.S. Census Bureau data, We hypothesize that heat stroke incidence and mortality rates will increase over the defined time period. Additionally, the highest mortality rates will be in the Northwest and among men, accounting for the lack of population acclimatization due to historically cooler temperatures, and occupational exposures.
