Abstract Pre-Review Program

Abstract pre-review to support equity and inclusion at SER Annual Meeting

Interested in serving as a mentor for the abstract pre-review program?

Mentors will be assigned 1-2 abstracts to review and provide feedback to the submitter. Assigned abstracts will be sent by January 5, 2025 and will be due by January 10, 2025.

Purpose:

Aid people interested in submitting abstracts to the SER annual meeting to ensure submissions come from individuals from diverse backgrounds who have been historically under-represented in annual conferences. This program is also intended for individuals at institutions historically under-represented in the SER membership. The pre-review process is open for SER non-members too.

What the pre-review is:

  • An opportunity to have an extra set of eyes review your abstract(s) before the formal submission process

  • A chance to get feedback on the overall content of your abstract(s) and presentation of information (clarity of methods presented, style, formatting, and language)

What the pre-review is NOT:

  • A guarantee that the pre-reviewed abstracts will be accepted after the formal review process by SER conference reviewers

  • A formal consultation on research design or proper methodology for the study

  • A requirement to add the pre-reviewer as an author

Timeline

The pre-review process will occur before the SER annual meeting deadlines for abstract submissions in order to prevent delays in the review process.

  • SER Annual Meeting General Abstract Submission: November 9, 2024 – January 13, 2025 (11:00am EST)

  • Deadline for pre-review submission: December 20, 2024 at 5pm EST

  • Reviewers will submit their feedback to abstract writers by January 5, 2025

Eligibility

The pre-review is available to people submitting abstracts who meet one or more of the following categories:

  • Early career person (e.g. student, post-doc)

  • Person for whom English is not their first language

  • Person residing in a low-middle income country

Who are the Pre-submission Reviewers:

Members of the SER D&I committee and other volunteers will review the pre-review submissions. In the program pilot, we will only guarantee the pre-submissions will be reviewed by one person.
