Creating Cultural Epidemiology

Epidemiology clarifies the distribution and determinants of health and underpins medicine and public health. Yet standard outcomes narrowly target physical, mental, and material aspects, overlooking much of life. Since judgments of ‘health’ are culturally shaped, health is plural.

Culture has also been invoked as a symbol of humanity. Article 25 of the Japanese Constitution affirms ‘a healthy and cultured life’. Indigenous ideas of well-being and philosophical and religious traditions offer perspectives missing from current metrics. Integrating these contexts into epidemiology can close such gaps.
