SPC Career Development Seminar: Understanding Citation Metrics and Impact

Citation metrics may play an important role in how early-career researchers are evaluated for hiring, promotion, and funding, yet they are often poorly understood. In this career development seminar hosted by the SER Student & Postdoc Committee (SPC), Dr. Andrew Rundle from Columbia University will demystify commonly used indicators such as the Journal Impact Factor (JIF), h-index, and composite citation scores, and explain how high-profile rankings, including Stanford’s Top 2% of Scientists Worldwide, are constructed and interpreted. The seminar will also highlight key limitations and hidden biases embedded in citation metrics, how these measures can be intentionally or unintentionally “gamed,” and why they may not accurately reflect the quality or societal impact of research.
