SPC President’s Message
As we move into November, I’ve been reflecting on where we are as a scientific community — and as people. Across the country, conversations about research priorities, academic freedom, and science communication continue to shape the landscape of public health and population science. These discussions remind us that the work we do doesn’t just live in data or policy; it connects directly to the wellbeing of families, communities, and the world around us. Even amid uncertainty, I’m encouraged by the creativity, collaboration, and care I see every day among our community. Progress happens when we show up for one another and work together toward a shared vision of healthier, more equitable communities. Continue to hold space, continue to support one another, and continue to show and tell others that our collective work matters.
The SPC Executive Board has been meeting monthly to plan new programming and identify ways to support our members. I’m especially excited about our upcoming webinar, Communication for Public Health Researchers, happening Wednesday, November 19, 2025, from 10:00–11:00 AM (MT). This session will explore how we can make our research more accessible and impactful by improving how we share findings with different audiences — from policymakers and practitioners to the communities most affected by our work.
SPC offers many ways for members to contribute and shape our community. You can join a committee, serve as a mentor to others, help organize events, or share your expertise in a webinar or workshop. Another great opportunity is SERPlaylists — short collections of key readings on focused topics, released every few months. Recent playlists cover methods for policy evaluation and handling missing data. Students and postdocs are especially encouraged to submit playlist proposals through the SERPlaylist website, and we recommend identifying a faculty mentor or senior colleague to help put together your playlist. The SPC is here to support you in contributing.
We’re also preparing for the SER Mid-Year Virtual Meeting, scheduled for February 9–13, 2026. It’s a chance to share your work, connect with colleagues, and be inspired by the amazing research happening across our field. A quick reminder that abstract submissions close November 15, 2025, at 10:00 AM ET, so don’t miss your chance to participate!
As the year winds down, I hope you find moments to rest and spend time with family, friends, and loved ones. This season is a great reminder to pause, recharge, and reflect on the people and communities that make our work meaningful. I’m grateful for this community and for all that each of you bring to SPC and SER. Let’s carry that same spirit of connection, gratitude, and collaboration into the months ahead.
With optimism and hope,
Anthony J. Nixon, Jr.
SER-SPC President
