Intersectional Health Research: Exposures to Disease Risk Factors and Molecular Pathways

Current intersectional health research, shaped by the intersection of the multiple axes of race, age, sex, and occupation, requires multilevel pathway-based studies to identify relevant mechanisms and interrupt contributing factors. For example, adverse social and environmental exposures can compromise an individual’s health through multiple pathways by interacting with biological factors, leading to a disproportionately high burden of diseases such as obesity, dyslipidemia, and cardiovascular risk factors. This suggests their relations to disease risk, but the underlying mechanism is largely unknown, and no direct markers are available to determine these health disadvantages.
