Sleep as a determinant of health: an interdisciplinary perspective
Sleep is identified as one of the three essential pillars of health, yet its influence extends beyond simply duration. Defined by Buysse as the ‘multidimensional pattern of sleep-wakefulness, adapted to individual, social, and environmental demands, that promotes physical and mental well-being,’ sleep is a strong determinant of overall health. One-third of U.S. adults report insufficient sleep duration, and the prevalence of sleep disorders has increased over the past 20 years. As such, Healthy People 2030 has identified sleep as a priority area for public health research and intervention.
