Bridging the Gap: From Classroom to Practice in Epidemiology Doctoral Training
Doctoral programs in epidemiology face the challenge of providing rigorous methodological training while preparing graduates for increasingly diverse career trajectories. Despite robust academic programming, gaps persist between classroom learning and real-world practice across academia, government, and industry settings. Graduates often complete rigorous coursework yet struggle with practical skills, unclear career pathways, and varying expectations across different epidemiology roles.
This disconnect manifests in several areas: leadership development, science communication, industry transitions, and holistic professional preparation. Traditional epidemiology coursework in statistical theory and study design may inadequately address emerging workforce demands for soft skills, public engagement capabilities, and translational research expertise. These gaps may disproportionately affect students from underrepresented backgrounds, who may have limited access to informal professional networks that provide career guidance.
