Wendy Nembhard

Dr. Wendy Nembhard is a perinatal epidemiologist, the Chair and Professor with tenure in the Department of Epidemiology at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), Fay W Boozman College of Public Health.  She is also the Center Director of the Arkansas Center for Birth Defects Research and Prevention.  She is also a Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the UAMS College of Medicine.  Prior to joining the College of Public Health in April 2017, Dr. Nembhard was the Section Chief of the Section of Birth Defects Research in the Department of Pediatrics at UAMS and the Scientific Director of the Arkansas Reproductive Health Monitoring System (the state’s birth defects registry) at Arkansas Children’s Hospital.

Before joining UAMS in August 2014, she was an Associate Professor with tenure in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics in the College of Public Health at the University of South Florida.  Before joining the faculty at the University of South Florida she was as a Research Instructor in the Maternal and Child Division of the National Center for Primary Care at Morehouse School of Medicine.  Dr. Nembhard completed a two-year Post-Doctoral fellowship in Social Epidemiology and Cardiovascular Disease at Morehouse School of Medicine.   Her PhD degree in Epidemiology and MPH in International and Family Health are from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, School of Public Health.   Dr. Nembhard’s research interest includes the etiology and long term outcomes of birth defects, infant mortality, preterm birth/low birth weight, and health disparities in perinatal outcomes.  Dr. Nembhard was a 2014 Australian-American Fulbright Senior Scholar, 2018 Fellow of the Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) Program at Drexel University, School of Medicine, is a Fellow of the American College of Epidemiology, a 2019 Fellow (fifth class) of the of the Aspen Institute Health Innovators Fellowship Program and a member of the Aspen Global Leadership Network.
