Abigail Cartus is a fourth-year PhD student in the Department of Epidemiology at the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health. Her dissertation research focuses on methodological and conceptual issues in maternal health research, specifically severe maternal morbidity. Her journey as an abolitionist began as an intern at the ACLU of Pennsylvania in 2008; since then, she has been involved in popular education initiatives about abolition, organizing to end contracts between public school districts and police departments, and mobilization around police violence and the health consequences of incarceration.
